About Me

Hi, I'm Randi Sparks. You may remember me from the 20 questions chain letter you were too busy to read or from my now defunct DeviantArt profile. Oh, who am I kidding? I've been all over the internet! Why, you can type my name into Google and get a total of 194 results! (Though I can't guarantee they're all about me.)

Why is this important? Well, it's not, but it's somehow relevant because I'm the author of Shimmer and, for all you know, a marvelous, talented human being who gives you a regular dose of dramatic superhero goodness. (Though personally I believe that I probably sound a lot smarter than I really am. Hooray for big words! Excelsior!)

Shimmer is by far one of the most fulfiling stories I've written to date. It's part experiment, part cathartic release, it's something that people have been able to connect with. Though it's not finished yet, and the story progresses on it's homepage and despite a few setbacks will continue for some time to come.

SHIMMER

Shimmer, while proclaiming to be a superhero story, is first and foremost a personal drama about a girl’s coming of age in extraordinary circumstances. Confused yet? Rest assured you’re not nearly as confused as Kaira Cade.

Glimmer Girl was always a deeply personal character and expressed ideas that were impossible to convey through anybody else. Her overall dilemma of being trapped in a body alien to her is a literal connection to the metaphor atypically applied to members of the transgendered community. Through her the story conveys a strong sense of loss, shame and eventually of triumph as she sorts her own conflicting feelings.

Initially inspired by the glossy heroes fresh from the pages of mainstream comic books Glimmer Girl was initially posted to be a member of a larger group but then ran the risk of falling into the background as a minority character. Instead she has been given the spotlight and the result is a story that is deeper, more insightful and also more exciting than any number of combined characters could have done in force.

Shimmer is a first person account designed to draw a reader in and take them to places both alien and familiar while viewing the contrast between a typical suburban home and a larger than life reality of heroes and villains. A serial in the truest form it has no real end, only a collection of sagas that put together one person’s life.

The first volume of Shimmer collecting webisodes 01 – 75 will be available from Wibbly Press early 2009.
